August was contest month at Cape Communicators Advanced Toastmasters – time for us to test our skills against one another to see who was the most humorous and the best at improvising an effective talk without warning. Craig Strachan was our Contest chairman who led us ably through the various parts of the evening, and Denise Montanari was Chief Judge, keeping an eagle eye to ensure all the rules were kept.

First up was the Humour Contest, where the speakers had to present a humorous speech or story between 5 and 7 minutes. It’s an interesting speech to develop, as it should not be a series of one-liner jokes but rather a speech with a theme. Penny de Villiers presented a speech entitled Divorce, Death and Dating highlighting the humorous side of post-divorce life and dating. Claire van Zyl followed up with a speech entitled Daredevils, ducks and dust about a recent experience riding her 150 cc at Killarney Racetrack. Lois Strachan told us why she is the world’s worst dinner guest in the Safe Option, and Sisi Nxumalo closed the contest with a speech about not letting life pass you by in You Snooze, You Lose.

After the break came the Table topics contest where we had to speak unprepared on a topic about what we would have on our manifesto if we were to stand for local government. Since I was competing, I’m only able to give you the briefest insights into how each contestant approached the topic – Sisi stating that she was going to run for President, Claire that she was uninterested in politics, Lois that she would safeguard the rights of guide dogs by removing squirrels and ducks from the community, and Penny explaining that she did not even have a manifesto for her life, let alone for a local government position.

Result of the contests were as follows: Humorous contest

  • 1st place: Claire van Zyl
  • 2nd place: Lois Strachan
  • 3rd place: penny de Villiers

Impromptu Contest

  • 1st place: Sisi Nxumalo
  • 2nd place: Lois Strachan
  • 3rd place: Claire van Zyl

Well done to all the contestants and good luck at the Area D3 contest on 30 August at the Fire & Ice!
