Last night Cape Communicators had the privilege of welcoming speaker agent, Bronwyn Hesketh as our guest speaker. Bronwyn is the owner of the speaker bureau, Speakers Inc, and has been involved in the professional speaking business for almost 20 years.
She presented a very candid and open Q&A about the speaking industry, covering such subjects as selecting speech topics, what you should charge to speak, the way she works as a speaker agent, and the duration of a typical professional speech. Her knowledge and experience were apparent in the way she answered each question, often giving us opinions from other agents in other countries as a comparison to demonstrate how speaker bureaus work. Certainly Bronwyn’s presentation generated much discussion, both at the break and after the meeting!
The second half of the meeting gave two experienced speakers the chance to show us what they could do. Chris Adlam told us about his journey in giving up smoking and revealed some of the “Smoke and Mirrors” that surround the Tabaco industry in his highly humorous speech of the same title drawn from the Professional Speaker manual.
Johan Viljoen presented a thought-provoking and topical speech entitled “#Fees Must Fall” giving us some alternative reasons behind what has become a hot topic in our country recently.
Craig Strachan chaired the round robin evaluations. Ryan Skews was our Timekeeper for the evening.
Afsana Khan served as our toastmaster of the Evening, keeping the meeting running smoothly and efficiently, in her usual professional manner.
President Claire van Zyl announced the implementation of our new Focus Group, a monthly informal session that will directly benefit members by allowing them to receive specific mentorship on either toastmasters or professional presentations. The first of the Focus Groups will take place in early February. VP education Lois will send information to members
All in all, our 2016 year started with a bang – with a value-filled meeting for all our attendees.
